Etsy review bombing: what to do when fake 1-star reviews hit your shop
A sudden run of 1-star reviews from buyers who never reply? How to tell an attack from bad luck, which reviews Etsy will remove, how to report them, and how to get the pattern looked at.
Some sellers describe it the same way: a shop with years of five-star reviews suddenly gets a one-star review every day or two, on bestsellers that haven't changed, from buyers who never answer a message. Sometimes the reviews don't even make sense — "I can't find it in the mail" on a PDF download.
That pattern can come from a competitor or from paid review attacks. It can also be a run of bad luck. The steps below work either way.
First, check whether it's really a pattern
Look at the last few months of low reviews together and ask:
| Sign | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Many more low reviews than usual, in a short period | Genuine problems usually build slowly, or follow a change you made |
| They hit your bestsellers, which haven't changed | Attacks target the listings that earn the most |
| Complaints that can't be true — shipping problems on digital downloads | A real buyer of a PDF knows it wasn't posted |
| Buyers don't reply when you offer help | Genuine unhappy buyers usually want a fix |
| Short, vague text, or none at all | There's nothing about the actual item |
| Several arriving within a few days of each other | Coordinated accounts often act in bursts |
If several of these fit, treat it as an attack and document it properly.
Report each review — with the right reason
Etsy only removes reviews that break its rules. Pick the reason that matches what the review actually says:
- A delivery or mail complaint on a digital download → the review is about Etsy or a third party, not your item. Say plainly that the item is an instant download and nothing is posted.
- Personal details (an email or phone number) → private information.
- "Refund me or the review stays" → the buyer is using the review to make demands.
- Insults or abusive language → inappropriate content.
Keep the report to the facts: what the review says, why it can't be about your item, the order and review dates, and that the buyer didn't reply. Our free review report builder writes this for you and tells you the deadline.
Then report the pattern, once
The report button looks at one review at a time, so a run of reviews that each look "objective" can all stay up. That's why the most useful step is a single support request about the whole pattern:
- Contact Etsy support through the Help Center (chat or a callback request), and note the case number.
- Describe your shop's record — sales, reviews, Star Seller history — and then the pattern, with dates.
- List each review: date, rating, listing, and why it's suspicious.
- Ask for the reviews to be looked at together by someone who can check the buyer accounts and orders.
- If the ticket is closed without an answer, follow up referencing the case number. A ticket closed with no reply is part of the record.
The support escalation template has the wording.
Protect the shop while you wait
- Reply publicly to each review, calmly and briefly. Future buyers read the replies more than the stars.
- Keep your service metrics strong: fast replies and on-time dispatch still count towards your standards.
- Encourage genuine reviews the normal way — a friendly thank-you message after delivery. Never offer anything in exchange for a review.
- Keep everything: screenshots of each review, the messages you sent, and every support reply.
How MakerSentry helps
MakerSentry's Review Shield syncs your Etsy reviews daily and alerts you when low reviews spike. It flags the suspicious ones and drafts a report for each, with its deadline. It writes the pattern request for support, builds a dated case file PDF, and keeps a log of every ticket so follow-ups write themselves. It can't remove reviews — only Etsy can — but it makes sure the right person sees the whole picture.

Questions
- Will Etsy remove reviews from a competitor?
- Etsy removes reviews that break its review policy. Reviews that look like an attack but don't break a specific rule are hard to remove one at a time, which is why it helps to show support the whole pattern with dates, order details and message history.
- How long do I have to report a review?
- Etsy lets sellers report a review within 100 days of the order's estimated delivery date. For digital downloads, delivery is immediate, so the clock starts at the order date.
- Should I refund the buyers who left the reviews?
- A refund doesn't remove a review, and offering one in exchange for changing a review breaks Etsy's rules. Refund only if you'd do it for the order anyway.
- Can I reach a real person at Etsy?
- Use Etsy's Help Center to contact support by chat or ask for a callback, and keep the case number. If a ticket is closed without an answer, reply to it or open a new one that references it. Keep each message short and attach the evidence once.
