How to write an Etsy appeal that reviewers can act on

A practical structure for appealing an Etsy listing removal: quote the notice, explain how you make the item, list dated evidence, and make one clear request.

Updated 2026-10-26 · Markdown

Many appeals fail because they read like a plea — “please reconsider, I'm a small business” — instead of a case the reviewer can verify. Treat it like a short evidence brief.

A structure that works

  1. Subject line — name the listing and its ID: Appeal — request to reinstate listing #1234567890 (“Speckled stoneware mug”).
  2. What happened — one sentence: which listing was removed, and under which policy.
  3. Quote the notice — paste the sentence from Etsy that states the reason. It shows you've read it and lets the reviewer see the case at a glance.
  4. Why the listing complies — two or three sentences about how you make the item: materials, process, where you work, and who (if anyone) helps. If you use a production partner, say that it's disclosed.
  5. Timeline — dated bullet points: when you photographed the item, when you listed it, the earliest archive snapshot, and when each copy first appeared elsewhere.
  6. Evidence — a list of what you're attaching.
  7. One clear request — reinstate the listing with its history and reviews.
  8. Offer more — say you can send more process photos or a short video the same day.

Example timeline

  • 7 Sep 2025 — original photo taken (camera EXIF date)
  • 10 Sep 2025 — listed on Etsy
  • 10 Sep 2025 — page archived by the Internet Archive
  • 22 Aug 2026 — copy first seen on AliExpress
  • 14 Sep 2026 — copy first seen on Temu

A timeline like this answers the reviewer's real question — who had it first? — in five lines.

Evidence that carries weight

  • Original image files, not screenshots. Camera and phone files usually keep the date they were taken.
  • Work-in-progress photos that show the same item, ideally with your workspace or tools visible.
  • Receipts for raw materials — clay, yarn, silver blank — rather than finished goods.
  • Third-party timestamps such as an Internet Archive snapshot of your listing.
  • A file list with SHA-256 hashes if you keep one; it shows files haven't been altered since you recorded them.

Things to avoid

  • Emotional appeals without evidence.
  • Accusing Etsy staff or the reviewer.
  • Sending dozens of unlabeled attachments.
  • Editing the removed listing before the appeal is resolved.

Questions

Where do I submit an Etsy appeal?
Usually from the policy notice itself — reply to Etsy's email or use the appeal option shown with the violation in Shop Manager. Etsy changes its interface from time to time, so follow the link in your notice when there is one.
How long should the appeal be?
Long enough to cover the notice, your making process, your evidence and your request — usually under a page. Reviewers handle many cases; clear structure matters more than length.
Can I appeal more than once?
If your first appeal is declined and you have new evidence, it's reasonable to reply with it. Stay factual and add something new each time rather than repeating the same message.
